HONDA CENTER DEBUTS BLOOM ENERGY FUEL CELLS IN MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVE
Bloom Energy, Honda Center and the Anaheim Ducks team up for a perfect power play

December 11, 2013 – Anaheim, Calif. – Anaheim Arena Management, LLC, the management company for Honda Center, held a celebratory event marking the completion of its Bloom Energy fuel cell project today. The fuel cell generates power through a clean and efficient electrochemical process, providing more than half of the power required by the sports and entertainment venue each year. Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait as well as the entire Anaheim City Council attended the event along with representatives from Honda Center, Bank of America, Bloom Energy, the Anaheim Ducks and the NHL.

“It’s truly exciting to work on a project with benefits that extend beyond those directly involved, and that make significant contributions to our environmental efforts,” said Tom Ricks, Chief Investment Officer for Anaheim Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli. “This new technology has incredible potential and we’re thrilled to have worked with city leadership, Bloom Energy and Bank of America to be among the first large-scale arenas to implement the system.”

“I applaud Anaheim Arena Management for their continued vision in putting the needs of their guests first and hosting premier events,” said Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait. “As a top-ten venue worldwide, Honda Center represents a progressive, service-oriented facility, and this fuel cell project provides a clean, reliable energy source that will continue that tradition.”

The Bloom Boxes will generate 80% of the venue’s base load power and 25% during a Ducks game or concert. On average, the project will allow the venue to offset 2 million pounds of CO2 annually. The project was financed through Bloom Energy’s leasing program with Bank of America. Honda Center is the second sports and entertainment arena in the country to install the Bloom Energy system, following SAP Center in San Jose, CA.

“This project is yet another example of businesses taking the lead in responsible energy management and sustainability,” said John Reuter, Vice President of Strategic Accounts, Bloom Energy. “At Bloom, we know that clean, reliable power is a winning strategy.”

In addition to these new environmental efforts, Honda Center also currently recycles all cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminum, paper, banners and lighting. The venue’s food and beverage operation also uses environmental thinking with regard to food preparation and purchases, using locally grown produce from sustainable farms and ranches, napkins made from recycled material, corn starch-based cups, carry trays made from recycled material and bulk mustard and ketchup dispensers to reduce waste.
