Former state Senator Lou Correa no longer has the 46th Congressional District field to himself. What has been rumored for weeks is now official – this just came over the transom from the new Jordan Brandman for Congress campaign:

I wanted you to hear the news from me first. I am running to succeed Loretta Sanchez to represent California’s 46th District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

I am running for Congress to fight for working families, help businesses create jobs, defend Social Security and Medicare, protect the environment, and ensure every child has access to a 21st century education. It is critical that Congresswoman Sanchez’s successor follow her example of commonsense leadership, and I am that person.

During my time on the Anaheim City Council, residents have come to enjoy new parks and better roads, feel safer with more public safety officers, and benefit from the Anaheim Convention Center expansion and the 1,860 jobs it will generate. As a School District Trustee, I advocated for our students, teachers, and employees to get the resources they needed in order to improve student performance and graduation rates.

This is the principled, results-oriented leadership I believe our community needs and deserves. I know this campaign will not be easy. Can I count on you to stand with me?

Please help launch our campaign:

I am ready to get to work, and I hope you are, too. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Jordan Brandman

In an accompanying press release, the Brandman campaign touts more than 30 endorsements from local officials and points out that 41% of CD46 voters live in Anaheim and that Brandman was the top-vote getter in his 2012 council election and “both his 2008 and 2010 elections to the Anaheim Union High School District Board of Trustees.”

It’s often overlooked that all of the conservative City of Orange west of the 57 freeway was shifted into CD46 during the 2012 reapportionment. Brandman grew up in Orange, where his family has been active in civic affairs for years and where he still has a network of relationships.

Other Potential Entrants
Garden Grove Mayor Bao Nguyen is also looking at jumping into this race. Nguyen has become the darling of Democratic Left in Orange County. Much has been made of his very narrow defeat of long-time Mayor Bruce Broadwater, but that more a collateral effect of the Janet Nguyen for Senate Vietnamese voter turn-out machine than any political magic Bao Nguyen possesses. His demeanor is reasoned and moderate, but his politics are planted firmly on the Left. Outgoing OCEA General Manager Nick Berardino is reported to be a big booster of Nguyen; in the last few years, Berardino has shifted from traditionally supporting the most electable Democrat to backing more authentically left-wing candidates. If Nguyen enters, he will easily be the most left-wing candidate in the race.

Whither Brandman’s Council Seat?
Since Brandman’s council term ends in 2016, does this preclude him from seeking re-election if he doesn’t make it to November 2016. No, because filing for city council doesn’t open until several weeks after the June primary that will determine whether he is on the November ballot. Brandman would still be in a strong position to win re-election to the city council if his congressional candidacy doesn’t pan out.
