The best defense against heat-related illnesses is prevention. During times of extreme heat, remain hydrated, limit activities, and remember to check on family, neighbors and friends who may be at risk. Also, never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car, even if the windows are open.
High temperatures increase the risk of heat related illnesses. The Orange County Health Care Agency advises that prolonged exposure to excessive temperatures may cause serious conditions such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke and can even be fatal. Symptoms of heat exhaustion may include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache, nausea or vomiting and dizziness. Warning signs of heat stroke may include an extremely high body temperature, unconsciousness, confusion, hot and dry skin (no sweating), a rapid, strong pulse, and a throbbing headache. If symptoms of heat stroke occur, immediately call for medical assistance. Move the person to a shady area and begin cooling their body with water.
September is National Preparedness Month, and in just a couple weeks Anaheim Fire & Rescue will launch a month-long campaign to highlight information on how to be prepared and ready in the event of an emergency. Resources and information are available at www.anaheim.net/fire.

Isn’t ARTIC air-conditioned?
I was thinking the same thing: it’s huge, air conditioned and COMPLETELY EMPTY.
Untrue! It has a ticket counter; it has escalators; it has some sort-of vendors.! And it has bathrooms — where the homeless could wash up and keep excreta off of public (and private) property!
Please note that most older seniors are not online and do not know about the cooling centers. Please walk over to the elderly neighbors you know may be at risk of over heating and inform them. The West Anaheim Youth Center is very cold and although it could use better seating and a working t.v., it’s clean, it does have free WIFI and free bottled water, and its COLD!
