Anaheim Insider here.
Mayor Tom Tait is mad. Really mad. He’s outraged because he wasn’t allowed to circumvent legally-established council rules and put the so-called “People’s Map” on tomorrow evening’s agenda.
Council policy dictates the mechanism by which councilmembers (which includes the mayor) can agendize items for council consideration: publicly requesting such during the two council communications portions of the council meeting. Unfortunately for Mayor Tait, he adjourned the last council meeting when his allies in the chamber went into mob-mode in an attempt to shut down the council meeting.
If the Mayor hadn’t obliged his radical allies by giving into their misbehavior and adjourning the meeting, he wouldn’t find himself frustrated and angered by City Manager Paul Emery’s insistence on following the rules. He could have utilized the second council communications segment at the end of the meeting to ensure to UNITE-HERE/OCCORD/Jose Moreno map — excuse me, the “People’s Map” — would be on tomorrow night’s council agenda.
According to the pro-Tait Voice of OC, “Tait and his allies” have denounced Emery adherence to the rules as a “parliamentary technicality.”
That’s funny, because Tait’s allies file lawsuits against Tait-opposed city initiatives that are based on “parliamentary technicalities.” Apparently, they’re only technicalities when they stand between Mayor Tait and his political objectives. When the rules can be made to work in his favor, it’s the law. When they’re obstacles, they’re illegitimate parliamentary technicalities to be ignored.
Reminds us of a certain occupant of the Oval Office, doesn’t it?
Mayor Tait fumed to the Voice that “it’s outrageous, extremely disturbing that the mayor can’t put an item on the agenda, especially one such as this — the major civil rights issue in a generation in our city.” Maybe, maybe not. the point is Tait pressured the City Manager to violate established council policy. If this were a member of the dreaded Council Majority pulling this stunt, the Voice, Tait and his allies would be equally outraged. If that stunt succeeded, Tait would denounce it from the dais and CATER would file a lawsuit. However, since Mayor Tait is apparently the living embodiment of the Will of the People of Anaheim, the rules don’t apply.
The moral of the story: a mayor should clear disruptive radicals from the council chambers and finish conducting the council business rather than allowing the mob to dictate when the council will adjourn. Contrary to the Voice of OC story, Tait wasn’t “forced” to adjourn the December 15 meeting; he chose to adjourn it.
Here endeth the lesson.

Our fumbling mayor is such a hypocrite. If only there were a non-profit investigative journalism news site brave enough to hold him accountable for it! Instead, we have a sycophantic “reporting” from a union-funded blog.
Classic ‘do as I say, not as I do!’
It’s the Dalai Lama’s fault! …”he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present.”
Greatest civil rights issue of a generation? Is he insane. This is all about whether the city puts district 2 up before District 3 as if one group of residents trumps another so for this mayor to make it about civil rights is abhorrent. If the rights of Latinos in Anaheim have been oppressed for decades and he’s been a member of the council for 15 years – whose to blame? The point is noones rights in Anaheim have been ignored – it is a big city with very real challenges. To put districting on par with civil rights is just completely out of touch with reality. Grow up Mr. Mayor and live by the same rules as everyone else.
Mayor Tait is a moron!!!! He is the worst thing to ever happen to Anaheim. He should start worrying about what really needs to be done instead of making crap up so he can have his friend sit on council with him. The West has real problems than need to be dealt with now. He feed us this load of bulls$@! About neighbors electing neighbors and the West is due for some neighbor representatives!!! And not just prt of the west the whole area! District 3 has gotten so much attention. My question is when they don’t get there way on something else are they going to claim civil rights injustice and sue the city again? These outside groups that are filling our council meetings should go back to there other cities and deal withthe problems in there own cities and leave this fight to the ACTUAL RESIDENTS!!!!
Hey, that’s way worse than my Lou Correa comments that you erased!
