The pre-trial hearing on Councilman Jose F. Moreno’s two misdemeanor counts of criminal arrest was continued yet again. He and his 20 co-defendants – including Ada Briceno, the boss of UNITE-HERE Local 11 and the OC Democratic Party – were scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on April 29. But since the courts are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the hearing was continued.
Briceno – whose union is largely responsible for Moreno’s election in 2016 – recruited Moreno to participated in the choreographed mass arrest, which cost Anaheim significant police resources to deal with. Briceno was arrested a second time later in 2019, for another protest-related offense.
This is the umpteenth time the hearing has been continued. Moreno and his comrades were arrested on January 24, 2019 for shutting down the busy intersection of Katella Avenue and Harbor Boulevard on the opening day of the city’s largest convention.
One year ago, Jose Frank Moreno and the others pled “not guilty” and are being collectively represented by criminal defense attorney Fred Thiagarajah. It is unclear if Moreno is paying his own pro-rated share of the legal bills, or if UNITE-HERE Local 11 is footing the whole bill. If the latter, Moreno will have to report that as a gift and would likely be prohibited from voting on any matter involving Local 11. Maybe the Voice of OC could look into this. Yeah, right.
