Councilwoman Gloria Ma’ae appears to be on her way to defeating her progressive Democratic challenger, Carlos Leon, and securing a full four-year term representing District 2 on the Anaheim City Council.

As of midnight last night, Ma’ae was leading progressive activist Carlos Leon by 388 votes, 53.38% to 46.62%.

Councilwoman Ma’ae was in front from the first vote tabulation report, and her lead continued to widen with each update. She led Leon in both early voting and among those using Vote Centers.

Ma’ae is a long-time community activist her has lived in West Anaheim for decades, raising her family there. She is a No Party Preference voter and was appointed to the city council in September 2021.

The District 2 councilmember raised $90,197 and had the support of businesses, community members, trade unions and both the police and firefighter unions. Leon raised $57,429 and was strongly backed by the Democratic Party establishment and Anaheim Resort labor unions.

Both candidates receives significant support from independent expenditure committees, although the bulk was spent boosting Ma’ae.  An IE committee funded by Resort District unions spent $87,781 on behalf of Leon.  Several IE committees variously funded by the police union, Disney, and business and property rights groups spent approximately $400,000 in support of Ma’ae.
